WHEN PARTNERSHIPS WORK

Life is Good, an apparel and accessories brand founded in 1994 by brothers Bret and John Jacobs, embraces simplicity and optimism at its core. Over the years, the company has grown into a thriving $100 million enterprise. The Jacobs brothers found a natural affinity with the Dr. Seuss brand, as they grew up reading his iconic books. The common thread between Life is Good and Dr. Seuss lies in their status as iconic companies, both boasting highly creative teams.

In its early days, the Jacobs brothers sold t-shirts out of the back of their Plymouth Voyager. It was only in 1994, when they infused their shirts with uplifting and optimistic phrases, that their business started gaining traction. The combination of positive wording and simplistic artwork resonated with customers, prompting a name change from "Jacob's gallery" to "Life is Good." Within three years, the company grew into a million-dollar enterprise.

The affinity for Dr. Seuss's books led Life is Good to embark on a partnership with the renowned brand. However, there was a challenge: Dr. Seuss characters could not be redrawn due to intellectual property regulations. The solution involved developing new guidelines to seamlessly incorporate the characters into Life is Good's distinctive drawing style.

The collaboration with Life is Good offered an opportunity for the Dr. Seuss team to reimagine their beloved characters with a fresh perspective from an established apparel company. While the characters were redrawn, strict guidelines were adhered to in terms of shape, color, and scale. The process involved iterative feedback, with Life is Good's talented team pushing creative boundaries while respecting the established guidelines.

The initial focus of the collaboration centered around Dr. Seuss's most popular IP, The Grinch. The resulting products proved immensely successful, with over 50+ Grinch pieces designed in various sizes, colors, and styles. As a creative manager, this project presented a delightful challenge, requiring innovative thinking while maintaining visual consistency and novelty.

In conclusion, the partnership between Life is Good and Dr. Seuss exemplifies the power of creativity and collaboration, as two iconic companies join forces to create innovative and uplifting products for their cherished audience.
