How do I make WHAT look easy?
How do you make it look so easy?
I wish I had the secret sauce. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me, "How do you make it look so easy?"—well, I’d probably have enough to fund my next big race entry! The truth is, there’s nothing easy about it. What you see on race day is the result of years of dedication, consistency, and a daily 5:30 AM workout routine.
Why Do I Work Out Every Day?
As a “fit-and-fine-as-wine”, hybrid athlete, my reasons for training go far beyond aesthetics or competition. I work out every day because:
It helps me stay in shape.
I sleep better sometimes.
Exercise makes me feel good.
It challenges me mentally.
Running helps me put life’s challenges into perspective.
I’ve been running for nearly 40 years and weightlifting since college. But it wasn’t always this way.
From Olive Oyl to Division 1 Athlete
Growing up, I was known for looking like Olive Oyl—thin, lanky, with big feet, and a head full of hair. That changed when I was introduced to weight training in college while competing in Division 1 track and field. Not only did I feel the benefits, but I saw them. I was no longer the skinny girl with ponytails; I became a stronger, more powerful athlete. I mean, I’m aware I’m still skinny but with added muscle_okay!
After retiring from track and field, I transitioned into 5K races. I loved the sense of community, the competition and the way running kept me feeling strong. Weightlifting took a backseat for a while—life, kids, and work became my focus. Plus, I was still riding the benefits of being young and a former collegiate athlete.
Rediscovering Strength Training in My 30s
In my mid-to-late 30s, after having two kids, I was reintroduced to high-rep, low-impact weight training. This wasn’t just about staying fit; it helped me drop my times in the 5K, 10K, and even half-marathons. Strength training made me a better runner and cyclist by enhancing my performance and endurance while preventing injuries.
Now that I’m older, weightlifting is no longer just about performance—it’s about longevity. I train to maintain muscle, stay strong, and keep running injury-free. I’ve learned that while I may not get faster as the years go on, I can continue to get stronger—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
The Real Secret? Consistency
When people ask me how I make it look so easy, the answer is simple: consistency. It’s what I do every day at 5:30 AM that makes it look effortless on race day. Fitness isn’t about quick fixes or short-term gains—it’s about showing up for yourself, day after day, year after year.
So, if you’re wondering how to make it “look easy,” the answer is: put in the work, stay dedicated, and embrace the process. Your future self will thank you!
